Aquachrome: Biennial Exhibit of Contemporary Watercolor
By Manifest Creative Research Gallery

International Deadline: July 29, 2019 – The Cincinnati based non-profit arts organization and gallery, Manifest, invites visual artists to submit works that utilize watercolor, gouache, ink wash and other similar painting media as their primary (but not exclusive) media.

Quite possibly the oldest form of painting, watercolor persists today, defying narrow categorization and broad stereotype. Practiced for centuries in concept development preliminary to ‘finished’ paintings made in oil or other scale-worthy durable media, watercolor also found favor with botanists, illustrators, and portraitists, and was applied to varied and countless surfaces.

The nature of the media itself represents a delicate and dictatorial transparency, fluidity, and a potential for expressive spontaneity. This not only makes it an ideal vehicle for visual art, but also one of training, intensity, philosophy, and play for any who practice it. Where an artist can easily dominate other painting media, forcing a will through viscous layers into a work of art like taming a wild horse, with watercolor there is dialog, compromise, and undeniable forthrightness. In this way the artist practicing watercolor works with a tiger in the room.

ELIGIBILITY
AQUACHROME is open to everyone. The only limitation is that entries must represent original works which feature watercolor, gouache, ink wash, or other similar painting media as their primary (but not exclusive) media..

MEDIA
Open to all traditional and non-traditional approaches to watercolor. Media such as ink wash and gouache that are used thinly or are otherwise applied or appear akin to watercolor are acceptable for this project, as are other media used in combination with watercolor as the primary media.

CASH AWARD
The annual Manifest Grand Jury Prize will result in the awarding of one significant cash prize ($2500) to a single work selected as the ‘best of the entire season’.

JURY & CURATOR
This exhibit will be juried by an anonymous several member volunteer panel of professional artists and academic advisors with a broad range of expertise relative to art and design. The jury will then pass along their recommendations to the exhibit curator who will design the exhibit from the jury-approved pool.

PUBLICATION
Manifest Press will produce a high quality hard-cover publication documenting each entire season of exhibits, artists, and works shown. This continues Manifest’s commitment to long-term documentation and dissemination of our projects, and the expansion of physical exhibits into a broader geography and time frame, while also bringing all exhibits together under one cover each year to create a better product which will be more valuable to the public, teachers, libraries, and exhibiting artists.

ENTRY FEE
$40 for up to four entries submitted. $5 per each additional entry. Fees are non-refundable. Number of entries is unlimited.

ENTRY
Visit Manifest Gallery online to Apply. The online submission process is preferred. However, discs may be submitted (see details on Prospectus).

SALES
Artworks are not required to be for sale in order to be included in our exhibitions. It is required that works are indicated as either “for sale” or not for sale (NFS) on the submitted entry form.
