By Philadelphia Sculptors

International Deadline: May 1, 2019 – Philadelphia Sculptors seeks artists to create temporary outdoor floating sculptural installations for our Fall, 2019 exhibition Flow, a collaboration with the Independence Seaport Museum.

The exhibition will be sited in the boat basin adjacent to the Museum, located at Penn’s Landing on the Delaware River in Philadelphia and will run from October 11 – November 30, 2019.

The intent of the exhibition is to unite art with the river, and with the Museum’s mission and programming. Five juried artists, along with five invited artists previously selected, will interpret the river and how it affects, and is affected by, human and natural history; human and natural migrations; climate change and the environment; economic development; and political currents.

All artists and artist teams working in three-dimensional media are eligible to apply. All work must  be original. Artists with backgrounds in site-specific installations are especially encouraged to apply, but any  artist may submit a proposal. Professionals from other fields, such as architecture, engineering, etc., are also  encouraged to apply.

Artists may work in any media that will best communicate the intent of their piece. However, there  are a number of considerations that must be factored in to assure the success of the proposal. If sited in the  water, the artworks must have a flotation system. Artists who have artworks sited on the docks may not  impinge upon the integrity of the docks themselves by nailing, screwing, drilling or in any other way impairing  the structures. All works will be outdoors for two months, and will be exposed to all types of weather,  including wind, waves, and temperature changes. Artworks that will be immersed in the water cannot use any  synthetic materials that might disintegrate, degrade, or in any other way harm the environment or the water.
There are outlets located in light boxes on the docks that can provide electricity to installations sited on the  docks, or near them. For artworks that are sited at a distance from the light boxes, alternate sources of power,  such as solar or long-lasting batteries, are suggested.

The jurors will be Nato Thompson, and Teresa Jaynes. The exhibition is also co-sponsored by the Dina Wind Art Foundation.

Accepted artists will receive a $2,000 honorarium.

$30.00 application fee.
