Animalis: Exploring the Real or Imagined Animal in Art
By Manifest Creative Research Gallery

International Deadline: September 4, 2018 – Manifest presents a call to artists for ‘Animalis’, an international exhibit of works exploring the real or imagined animal in art.

Images of animals in art have existed parallel to those of humans for as long as images (and objects) have been made by people. Our social, creative, and psychological evolution is inextricably tied to our relationships with animals. Whether it be the taming of the wolf, resulting in ‘man’s best friend’, the tethering of the horse which magnified the power and geographic reach of humans, or the domestication of herd animals which contributed to the establishment of cities and large concentrations of people (and the growth of culture), they are all part of the trajectory of humanity to this point in time.

All have been documented, explored, and deified throughout the long process by images and objects featuring animals. But this isn’t just history (and pre-history). The animal remains a powerful subject in current art. So Manifest has chosen once again to feature an exhibit which will reveal the state of the animal in art. With this we call for artists working in any media to submit works that in some way feature or address animals, real or imagined.

This exhibit has no predefined expectation for type or style of work to be considered or selected. Submissions can range from the most traditional to the most conceptual or experimental two-dimensional or three-dimensional works. The only criteria beyond excellent quality is that works must somehow address or feature the animal as primary subject, form, or content.

CASH AWARD
The annual Manifest Grand Jury Prize will result in the awarding of one cash prize ($2500) to a single work selected as the ‘best of the entire season’. Winner will be determined by a final end-of-year jury from among a pool of all top-scoring works from each exhibit’s jury process across the current exhibition season.

MEDIA
Open to any and all traditional and non-traditional visual arts media.

JURY & CURATOR
Manifest’s selection process involves a complex two-part system. This exhibit will be juried by an anonymous several member panel of professional and academic advisors with a broad range of expertise relative to art and design. The jury will then pass along their recommendations to the exhibit curator who will make the final selections from the jury-approved pool.

PUBLICATION
Manifest Press will produce a high quality hard-cover publication documenting each entire season of exhibits, artists, and works shown. This continues Manifest’s commitment to long-term documentation and dissemination of our projects, and the expansion of physical exhibits into a broader geography and time frame, while also bringing all exhibits together under one cover each year to create a better product which will be more valuable to the public, teachers, libraries, and exhibiting artists.

ENTRY FEE
$40 for up to three entries submitted. $10 per each additional entry. Fees are non-refundable. Number of entries is unlimited.
