Reduction: An International Call for Works of Art About Scaling Back
By Manifest Creative Research Gallery – Cincinnati, Ohio, United States
International Deadline: February 13, 2020 – The
Cincinnati based non-profit arts organization and gallery, Manifest,
invites visual artists to submit works which in some way address or
reflect the theme of REDUCTION.
All art is by one means or another ‘designed’. Contrary to the common
assumption that art is a process of adding material up, assembling,
growing a thing from raw materials, to design something effectively
generally involves the under-appreciated skill of reduction—the cutting
away of extraneous, unnecessary elements and material, the elimination
of all that is not in the work’s best interest, even if this is simply a
process of decision-making—in order to reach a single, conclusive
whole. When this is done well it is considered to be an example of
Unity, where all the parts add up to a well-functioning unit, something
greater than just their sum, without anything unnecessary getting in the
way or distracting from the content of the work.
Artists are encouraged to take a broadly creative view in
interpreting the theme as it applies to their work. Works may reflect
reduction as a part of the process of its making (carving or cutting
away), or address the theme by the evident honing of the formal or
conceptual aspects of the art work.
ELIGIBILITY & MEDIA
Reduction is open to everyone. The only limitation is
that entries must represent original works which address the broad theme
described above. Submitting works shown previously in Manifest’s
physical gallery exhibits is discouraged.
Open to any and all traditional and non-traditional visual arts media.
JURY & CURATOR
Manifest’s carefully assembled juries of professional and
academic advisors change from project to project, and have no collective
predisposition towards any particular kind or style of art.
Manifest Press will produce a high quality hard-cover
publication documenting each entire season of exhibits, artists, and
works shown. This continues Manifest’s commitment to long-term
documentation and dissemination of our projects, and the expansion of
physical exhibits into a broader geography and time frame, while also
bringing all exhibits together under one cover each year to create a
better product which will be more valuable to the public, teachers,
libraries, and exhibiting artists.
AWARDS & CASH PRIZES
The annual Manifest Grand Jury Prize will result in the
awarding of one significant cash prize ($2500) to a single work selected
as the ‘best of the entire season’. Winner will be determined by a
final end-of-year jury from among a pool of all top-scoring works from
each exhibit’s jury process across the current exhibition season… see more
$40 for up to four entries submitted. $5 per each additional entry. Fees are non-refundable. Number of entries is unlimited.
Visit Manifest Gallery online to Apply. The online submission process is preferred. However, discs may be submitted (see details on Prospectus).
SALE OF ARTWORK
Artworks are not required to be for sale in order to be included in our
exhibitions. Manifest Gallery will retain a commission of 30% of the
sale price on all artwork sold during the exhibition.
