Wood: An International Call for Works of Art Made With, By, or About Wood
By Manifest Creative Research Gallery – Cincinnati, Ohio, United States

International Deadline: February 11, 2020– The Cincinnati based non-profit arts organization and gallery, Manifest, invites visual artists to submit works which in some way address or reflect the theme of WOOD.

Wood has been used by people for thousands of years for fuel, as construction material, for making tools, weapons, furniture, and paper. But as a product of the Earth it has existed far longer than humanity, for roughly 400 million years. Like land-based coral, its layers accumulate year by year by virtue of a living and breathing process. These layers often become, either through intention or circumstance, an aesthetic aspect of wood’s afterlife as man-made objects. When visible this evidence of years spent living, breathing, and drinking adds compelling meaning to things made with wood. The craftsmanship of artists and other makers elevates this latent content from something hidden to a celebratory proclamation about living.

Artists are encouraged to take a broadly creative view in interpreting the theme as it applies to their work. Works may be made of wood, made using wood in ways that are discernible in the finished work, or made about the subject of wood. Submissions can range from the most traditional realism to the most conceptual, abstract, or experimental work. This includes furniture, craft work, fine art, sculpture, etc.

ELIGIBILITY
WOOD is open to everyone. The only limitation is that entries must represent original works which address the broad theme described above. Submitting works shown previously in Manifest’s physical gallery exhibits is discouraged. Our multi-member juries embrace surprise, creative solutions, and most of all exceptionally well put together visual art. The bottom line is the work should address the general theme discussed above in some way, even if subtle and understated.

MEDIA
Open to any and all traditional and non-traditional visual arts or crafts media capable of addressing the above theme.

CASH AWARD
The annual Manifest Grand Jury Prize will result in the awarding of one significant cash prize ($2500) to a single work selected as the ‘best of the entire season’.

JURY & CURATOR
This exhibit will be juried by an anonymous several member volunteer panel of professional artists and academic advisors with a broad range of expertise relative to art and design. The jury will then pass along their recommendations to the exhibit curator who will design the exhibit from the jury-approved pool.

PUBLICATION
Manifest Press will produce a high quality hard-cover publication documenting each entire season of exhibits, artists, and works shown. This continues Manifest’s commitment to long-term documentation and dissemination of our projects, and the expansion of physical exhibits into a broader geography and time frame, while also bringing all exhibits together under one cover each year to create a better product which will be more valuable to the public, teachers, libraries, and exhibiting artists.

ENTRY FEE
$40 for up to four entries submitted. $5 per each additional entry. Fees are non-refundable. Number of entries is unlimited.
